So, people are your main asset?
Large corporations and organisations all spout the mantra that 'people are our main asset'. But they all know too that people are the source of most trials and tribulations and require vast amounts of time and energy to keep performing sweetly.
For a micro or small business, with just 1 or a few people in the team, having anyone who is distrptive, lazy or incompetent onboard can spell misery and failure if not dealt with. When that person is a family member, well, watch the fireworks.
I was once in business with my elder brother and we were very fortunate not to have personal clashes disrupting day-to-day business, but one day when an employee saw fit to complain to my brother about my approach to managing the retail store, he quickly found himself in the middle of a debate he couldn't hope to win. Brothers who work well together are tough to divide, unless the debate centers on something so clear cut and costly to the business that the employee making such a complaint has to be acknowledged as being right.
What happened from then on was that the employee found his relationship with me went downhill and both he and I were unhappy with one another for some time. That was 32 years ago, and even now when we occasionally meet, the friendship that was once there remains changed for the worse.
So the truth is people are both asset and liability - and being in any micro or small business is all about managing your assets and liabilities.
